Introducing Fishing ExplorePACKS at RPL

Richmond, BC – The Lower Mainland offers plentiful free public access to lakes and coastal waterways, home to a variety of species of fish and shellfish. Richmond Public Library wants to help you get out and explore these local waterways. Designed to promote an appreciation for the rich fishing heritage and history of Richmond, we are pleased to announce the addition of Fishing ExplorePACKS to our lending library. These ExplorePACKS were made possible by a generous donation from gofishbc’s Rod Loan program. RPL is the first library in Western Canada to offer a service that provides fishing rods and tackle to borrow.

The Fishing ExplorePACKS are easy-to-use and suitable for those with beginner to intermediate fishing skills. We have kits with one, two and four rods available to borrow, so that families of all sizes can enjoy borrowing these kits to experience the joy of fishing together.

Each Fishing ExplorePACK comes equipped with everything you need to go out for a day of local fishing. It contains a rod and line, tacklebox, accessories and simple instructions along with a selection of Richmond-specific fishing guides.

The library currently has six Fishing ExplorePACKS in its collection and they are available now for teens, adults and seniors to borrow with your RPL card. Holds can be placed here https://www.yourlibrary.ca/fishing; they must be returned to the Circulation Desk at the Brighouse branch.

“By providing fishing rods and basic tackle at no cost, the Rod Loan Program reduces barriers for people who want to give fishing a try,” said Jessica Yarwood, Outreach Coordinator for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. “We are very excited to partner with Richmond Public Library and offer this program in time for the fall fishing season!”

This is the third set of new kits that the library has added to its collections this year, following the introduction of the Birdwatching ExplorePACKS and the new STEAM kits for school-aged children. In the coming months, the library will be adding Ukulele kits to inspire musical creativity amongst library members of all ages.

Want to learn more? Stop by the Brighouse branch and ask a staff member to see one of the Fishing ExplorePACKS in person (subject to availability), or visit the library’s website. Happy fishing!
